Apollo 1 Tragedy
Tragedy struck on the launch pad at Cape Kennedy during a preflight test for Apollo 204. The mission was to be the first crewed flight, & was scheduled to launch Feb. 21, 1967. 3 Astronauts lost their lives when a fire swept through the command module. The missions of Apollo 204 & Apollo 202 with Apollo spacecraft aboard had been unofficially known as Apollo 1 and Apollo 2 missions. The eventual launch of Apollo 204 became known as the Apollo 5 mission. -

Apollo 13
NASA's Apollo 13 was slated to be the United States' third lunar landing mission. It launched April 11, 1970. The mission was aborted after the service module oxygen tank ruptured. As the crew finished a 49-minute TV broadcast showing how comfortably they are. 9 mins. later, oxygen tank #2 blew up, causing #1 tank to fail. The crew was about 200,000 miles from Earth. The Apollo 13 crew safely landed in the Pacific on April 17, 1970. -

The shuttle was humankind's first re-usable spacecraft. The two solid rocket boosters that helped push them into space would also be re-used, after being recovered in the ocean. Only the massive external fuel tank would burn up as it fell back to Earth. It was all known as the Space Transportation System.
