The Great Migration was one of the largest movements of people in US history. Approximately six million Black people moved from the American South to Northern, Midwestern, and Western states roughly from the 1910s until the 1970s. It was primarily driven by push and pull factors. Racial violence, systematic racism, & economic hardship were push forces in the South. African Americans had to deal with prejudice, segregation, & violent threats such as lynchings & the rise of the Ku Klux Klan.

The WPA was created as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program designed to reduce the unemployment rate through the building of national infrastructure as well as a renewal of the arts community. The WPA provided positions in government and trades for unskilled laborers on federal assistance, granting other opportunities to marginalized populations. The program ceased to exist in 1943 prior to the beginning of World War II due to military enlistment and weaponry production.
