In 1560, construction began on the Church of Santa Úrsula. There was already a hermitage in the place, and when Pedro de Ponte arrived on the island, he ordered the construction of the church, and also to enlarge the hermitage.

In the 1987 elections, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga became mayor of the municipality, from the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). He has maintained his mandate to the present, having been in office for 36 years now.
