It ended with the unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. Germany surrendered on May 7th to the Western Allies, and May 8th to the Soviet Union, 1945, about a week after Adolf Hitler had committed suicide.

After WWII it was formed to replace the League of Nations and hopefully rectify the problems with it's predecessor. Ultimately it was created to stop another massive war by providing a forum for mediation. It branched out into other areas as well.

The soviet union were strong in numbers therefore an alliance was formed, if any country outside of NATO was to attack any of the countries within NATO, all of the countries within NATO would go to war to stop the threat.
