Significant 20th Century Events

  • Indian Independence

    India gained its independence from the Indian Independence Act 1947 signed by the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It divided British India into Pakistan and India.
  • Creation of Israel

    After the Holocaust, there was great sympathy for the Jews, and many western countries wanted a homeland for them. The Jews wanted Palestine as their homeland because it was their promised land. Because the Arabs were already living there, they did not want to give up their homeland. The U.N. split the land between the two groups but gave the Jews more than half of it. The Jews portion of land became the State of Israel. These events caused much hatred between the two groups.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    As West Berlin was cut off from the rest of Germany, its people were not able to get the supplies they needed for everyday life. An airlift, mostly under U.S. command, was instituted to help the people of West Berlin. More than 2 million tons of goods were flown into the city.
  • Formation of NATO

    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO, was formed due to the threat of an expanding Soviet Union. It included the United States, United Kindom,, Canada, Norway, Italy, and many more.
  • Korean War

    Korean War
    The Korean War initiated from the division of Korea into two parts after WWII. A United Nations force led by the U.S. aided the South Korea, while China and the Soviet Union fought for the North. Korea was divided at the 38th parallel before the war and pretty much stayed in the same position after the war, which proclaims the fact that not a lot of ground was taken during the war.
  • Formation of the Warsaw Pact

    The Warsaw Pact was made in reaction to West Germany joining NATO. It was also made in motivation for the Soviets to maintain military control in Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Launch of Sputnik

    Launch of Sputnik
    Sputnik was launched by the Soviets in 1957. It was the first man made satellite to orbit the earth. This launch sparked a huge increase in funds toward the U.S. space program.
  • Ayatollah Khomeini is Supreme Leader of Iran

    Khomeini desired to bring back the Islam practices to Iran, after he noticed that they were being abandoned. He became the supreme leader and led through Islamic teachings.
  • Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat

    Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat
    President Anwar Sadat was assassinated during a victory parade celebrating the taking back of the Sinai Peninsula from Israel. The assassins were identified as members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad.
  • Tiananmen Square Protest

    Tiananmen Square Protest
    These protests were a series of demonstrations against the Chinese governement. Thousands poured into this square to protest. The military reacted violently and killed some of the protesters.
