    He had the largest army and he still lost to the Russians. He was considered a military genius and the defeat ruined his reputation of being undefeated. It was the turning point of the Napoleonic wars. The French’s army was reduced by more than two thirds.

    The Japanese defeated the Russians many times, and there were approximately 89,000 Russian and 71,000 Japanese casualties. President Roosevelt of the U.S. was the mediator at the peace conference, which resulted in the treaty of Portsmouth. Japan gained control of the Liaotung Peninsula, Port Arthur and the South Manchurian railroad.

    By the end of the war Russia had been militarily and politically defeated and ceased to exist. Russia had 6,553,000 men but they only had 4,652,000 rifles. Untrained troops were ordered into battle without weapons or ammunition.

    There were 9 million casualties for Russia, 3.6 million died in German captivity. Over 11.4 million soviet civilians were killed.

    Hazifullah Amin was the Prime Minister he wanted to sweep away the Muslim tradition. He was arresting Muslim leaders also. Soviet troops had captured Amin, who was executed him along with several members of his family for crimes against the people and seized control of the capital.

    Nikita Khrushchev had the idea of placing nuclear missiles in Cuba to shoot at the United States and they retaliated in the Bay of Pigs and were defeated.

    Chechnya declared independence when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. Soon after President Yeltsin responded with military force. It ended with a Russian victory in 2009.
