Second Industrial Revolution Timeline

  • Bessemer Process

    The process was created by Sir Henry Bessemer. It allowed the mass production of steel. It also decreased cost and labor while speeding up production time.
  • Internal Combustion Engine

    Belgian Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir created the first internal combustion engine. It took the place of the steam, and it gave the world automobiles, airplanes, and submarines.
  • Suez Canal

    It is a sea-level waterway in Egypt.The canal was built by new explosives, and it connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea.
  • Electric Lamp

    It was created by Thomas Edison and Sir Joseph Swann separately. The lamps lasted a lot longer than before, and they were brighter too.
  • Mount Cenis

    It was built by explosives and one of the first great tunnels built. The mount connects Val-Cenis in France in the northwest and Susa in Italy in the southeast.
  • Rayon

    Rayon is created from nitrocellulose. Count Hilaire de Chardonnet created the first man made fibers. Rayon revolutionized the textile industry because chemistry made it possible to produce synthetic fabrics.
  • First automobile

    Karl Benz patented the first automobile. It was the first to generate its own power, instead of using horses.
  • Marconi's Invention

    Marconi successfully transmitted wireless signals across the Atlantic. He sent the first radio wave from Poldhu in Cornwall, England, to Newfoundland, Canada. People across continents were now more connected.
  • The Simplon

    It was also built by explosives and is another one of the great tunnels built. It connects Brig in the canton of Valais with Domodossola in Piedmont.
  • Panama Canal

    It connects the Pacific Ocean with the Atlantic Ocean, and it was also built with explosives. It is a 48-mile waterway.
