School Nutrition Program Timeline

  • Free and Reduced Lunch Program

This is an income based program that provides lunch at a reduced cost for low income families. 21.5 million low-income children participated in the National School Lunch Program on a typical day in the 2014-2015 school year. Meals must meet federal nutrition standards. This means the meals are required to include whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. I think this program is so important because proper nourishment provides students with the capability to excel in their academic endeavors!
  • Special Milk Program

This program reimburses schools for giving students milk. In 2011, 3,848 schools and residential child care institutions participated, along with 782 summer camps and 527 non‐residential child care institutions. Schools or institutions must offer only pasteurized fluid types of fat free or low‐fat (1%) milk. These milks must meet all State and local standards. All milk should contain vitamins. I think this program is extremely important as Milk is necessary for adequate growth at a young age.
  • Child Nutrition Act of 1966

This act extended the governments efforts to feed the nation's children healthy and nutritious foods. Some students may receive all their meals from school. A poor diet can lead to energy imbalance and can increase one’s risk for overweight and obesity. Without a well balanced diet a child's brain might not develop normally. Children may be malnourished and in the long run this could impede brain growth and affect their ability to learn.
  • Breakfast Program

This program gives the possibility to all students to have a nutritious breakfast every morning. As we all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides us with the energy to fuel the rest of our day and triggers our metabolism. It is important that students receive adequate nutrition before their school day begins. With the proper breakfast students are more likely to have the energy to succeed throughout their academic endeavors!
  • Department of Defense Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program

This program delivers fresh fruits and vegetables to schools and military bases. This offers the school the produce allotment from the USDA. So, schools do not have to use their funds for fresh fruits and vegetables. Fruits provide a great source of sweetness and vitamins. While vegetables also contain several vital nutrients. It is so important that students receive adequate amounts of fruits an vegetabels every day!
