Sandra Cisneros Timeline

  • Born

    Born in Chicago on December 20th, 1954. She was born to parents Alfredo and Elvira Cisneros. She was the third of seven children, and the only girl of the seven.
  • Graduating College

    Graduating College
    Cisneros graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Iowa in 1978. This was the turning point in her writing career, propelling her into writing her first work, a chapbook of poems titled "Bad Boys" in 1980.
  • Teaching

    After completing her college Masters Degree, Cisneros taught former highschool dropouts at the Latino Youth Highschool in Chicago.
  • Fellowships

    Sandra recieved fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981 and 1988. She also received a fellowship from the Frank Dobie Artists group. She received a MacArthur fellowship in 1995.
  • House on Mango Street

    Cisneros' most famous publication "The House on Mango Street" was released in 1984 by Arte Público Press. Has sold over two million copies world wide.

    The House on Mango Street won the Columbus Foundation's American Book Award in 1985 just one year after being published. Winning This award helped Cisneros gain popularity for her writings and stories.
