    Born in Chicago on December 20th, 1954. She was born to parents Alfredo and Elvira Cisneros. She was the third of seven children, and the only girl of the seven.
  • Graduating College

    Cisneros graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of Iowa in 1978. This was the turning point in her writing career, propelling her into writing her first work, a chapbook of poems titled "Bad Boys" in 1980.
  • Teaching

    After completing her college Masters Degree, Cisneros taught former highschool dropouts at the Latino Youth Highschool in Chicago.
  • Fellowships

    Sandra recieved fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1981 and 1988. She also received a fellowship from the Frank Dobie Artists group. She received a MacArthur fellowship in 1995.
