  • Butler Education Act

    Free COMPULSORY secondary education to 15
    Free education until 18. 3 tyes of secondary school available depending on 11+:

  • Crowther Report

    Recommends raising school leaving age to 16 years
  • Circular 10/65

    Requested move from selective system to comprehensive system. Removal of 11+ begins
  • Circular 10/70

    Withdrew requirement for LEAs to become comprehensive. Between 1965 and 1970 most LEAs abandoned the 11+ test.
    Only 164 grammar schools remain today.
  • School leaving age raised to 16

  • Special Education Act

    LEAs have duty to assess and support childred with special needs. SEN pupils also can now be educated in mainstream schools.
  • Introducation of NVQ

    Introducation of National Vocational Qualifications to accredit competence in the work place.
