Ruby Bridges

  • Going to School For the First Time

On this day Ruby bridges was escorted to her new school, William Frantz School, for the first time. During this day there was no learning and she was taken inside the principal's office. This would change her belief to that this is a celebration and that the people were around.
  • Barbara Henry begins teaching Bridges

On her second day of school only one teacher, Barbara Henry, agreed to teach a black student. These two spent the entire year together. This event would have shaped her to believe that not all people were bad or wanted her dead.
  • Bridges begins getting stressed

After Winter Break let out Ruby began showing signs of stress, such as having nightmares and not eating her lunch, but hiding it in the classroom. Because of these incidents she begins seeing a therapist. I believe this changed her belief that people wouldn't hurt her. I can relate to this by the fact that I have gotten stressed out by students before to the point of nightmares and not eating as much.
  • Bridges Second Year of School Starts

Bridges goes to her second year of school, which is much more tame then the original year. I believe her belief would have changed to the point where she thought life might get better.
  • Bridges gets married to Malcolm Hall

Bridges gets married to Malcom Hall in 1984 and later on became a full time parent to their four sons. This would have shaped her beliefs in the way that she was a parent and a wife now and had come a long way.
  • Bridges younger brother is killed

Ruby's youngest brother Malcome was killed in a drug-related killing. As a result of this Bridges watched after his four children who were attending William Frantz School. I believe this changed her beliefs in the way that she watched four children go to the same school she did with no problem, which meant that she had done something to help them go there.
  • "The Story of Ruby Bridges" is published

Robert Coles, who was Bridges childhood psychologist, published a childrens book that was based on Ruby Bridges.
  • Barbara Henry and Bridges reunite

Barbara Henry contacts Bridges and reuintes with her on the Oprah Show soon after Coles book is published.
  • The Ruby Bridges Foundation is founded

After working with the school for awhile Bridges decided to form the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which promoted tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences. I think this helped her to believe that all parents need to get involved with their students.
  • Children's Museum of Indianapolis unveiles a new exhibit

The Children's Museum of Indianapolis unveiled a new exhibit that documented the lives of Ruby Bridges, Anne Frank, and Ryan White. This may have changed her beliefs so that she knew that people would know her story and that people would understand what had happened and segregation back then.
