Exposition
Characters: Cassie Logan, Stacey Logan, Christopher-John Logan, Clayton Chester Logan, Big Ma, and Mama (Mary), Papa (David), TJ, Claude. Setting: Mississippi 1930's. Conflict: The Blacks aren't being treated fairly, and the Logan family is trying hard to survive, and make money as they are sort of being chased by the whites. -
Event 1: Miz Logan covers the front cover of school book
At school little man was opening his text book, and abruptly threw it on the ground stomping on it. His teacher told him to stop, but he was mad because he saw that white kids names had been written on the inside of the book. He realized that the only reason the blacks got the books was because the whites were done. So little man took his book to his mom, and she took a piece of construction paper and glued it right over the names. Little man couldn't see them anymore. -
Event 2: The Bus
Everyday that The Logan kids walk to school, the school bus full of white kids run into a big puddle and it gets them all dirty and gross. They can't help it. The whites think they are better than the blacks. -
Event 3: Mr. Morrison
Cassie's dad Paul hardly ever comes home. There was a time when he did though. He brought home another man too. They were all very confused, but papa said that his name was Mr. Morrison and had gotten fired from the cotton fields. So he brought him to the Logans house. He was going to protect and watch over the family since papa had to work. -
Event 4: Strawberry
Cassie, Stacey, TJ, and Big Ma head up to strawberry to do some shopping. TJ, Stacey, and Cassie head up to the store to do some shopping while Big ma is talking to Mr. Jamison. The clerk ignores them. Cassie asks him if he is going to help and he said he needed to help the white people first. Cassie got mad and yelled and so the clerk yelled back. Stacey warned Cassie not to do that. -
Event 5: Uncle Hammer
The Logan kids uncle comes to stay with them for a while because it is almost Christmas. He has a very nice car, and doesn't make a bad amount of money. He warns the kids about the white people and to never go near them. -
Event 6: Stacey's New Coat
Uncle Hammer and the Logan family were on their way to church, when he saw that Stacey's winter coat would not be good enough. So he gave Stacey his Christmas present early. It was a brand new winter coat. He gladly wore it to church until T.J convinced Stacey to give it to him. Uncle Hammer assured Stacey that he better learn to keep his things because he won't get anymore nice things if he doesn't. He needs to learn that lesson. -
Event 7: Papa Comes Home
Cassie's papa comes home for Christmas. Everyone just knew that he would show up! They are all so excited that he is home. They never get to see him anymore because he is constantly working in the fields and sends money to the family. They all have a big feast for Christmas, and enjoy each others company. -
Event 8: Wallace and Vicksburg stores
When Stacey, L.T, and Papa decide to go to shop at Vicksburg they get ambushed. Papa is repairing a wheel while he gets fired at. The horse reared up in fright and ran over papa's leg breaking it. Stacey feels like it is his fault and know the family is struggling with money. -
Event 9: T.J's White Friends
T.J has now found some of his own "friends". He no longer wants to hang out with Stacey. he thinks he is the best now because of his fine clothes and white friends. Their names are Melvin ad R.W. They talk behind him thought when he isn't there. Although T.J thinks he can still come to Stacey if he needs help... -
Event 10: The Action
T.J comes knocking on the Logan's house. He has been badly hurt. He said that he went to Strawberry with Melvin and R.W. He said he thought he was getting a pistol he wanted, but the white boys robbed the store instead and blamed it on T.G who got beat up. That is when mama and Big ma noticed the cotton field on fire. Cassie realizes it was her father who started the fire. -
Resolution
The Logan family is successful in maintaining their farm. In Cassie has learned many lessons like to reconcile the streak of pride that she has from uncle Hammer and her rational dignified view on racism from her parents. Although papa saved T.J temporarily with the fire. He will most likely be hanged for killing Mr.Barnett. The last line from Cassie is "I cried for T.J. For T.J and the land."
