  • 7 years War

    -The British increase war funds

    -Goal was to decrease smuggling
    -Indirect tax; added into cost of Sugar

  • Stamp Act 1765

    -Tax on all printed goods
    -Direct Tax; Paid separate from item
    -Ranged from 1 (newspapers) to $10 (diplomas)
    -People refused to pay taxes
    -Additional tax; felt rightd were violated
    -Attacks on Soldiers and Tax Collectors
    -Boycotts
  • Townshend Acts 1766

    -British repeal Stamp Act; replaced with Townshend Acts
    -Tax on glass, paint, tea, etc.
    -Exception; Money used to finance troops in colonies
    -Repealed after 4 years (1770)
  • Boston Massacre

    -British soldiers went to support a sentry
    -Pressed by a heckling, snowballing crowd
    -British Soldiers left off shots
    -3 people killed, 2 people died later from their wounds
    -British officer Captain Thomas Preston was arrested for manslaughter, along with his 8 men.
  • Tea Act 1773

  • Boston Tea Party

    -involved Sam Adams and Sons of Liberty; disguised themselves as Mowhawk indians
    -met at Boston Harbor
    -dumped 63 crates of tea; worth roughly $1-$3 million

  • Lexington and Concord

    -American's fired when redcoats were several yards away; British retreated
    -Patriots' gunfire had cut down 1,000 enemy troops; more than 800 wounded
    -more than 100 americans perished; 300 wounded
