  • Declaratory Act

    This Act was passed b England to reaffirm its authority to pass any colonial legislation it saw fit.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first internal tax levied directly on American colonists by the British Parliament. The tax was a way to help the British pay for the French and Indian War. The British felt they were well justified in charging this tax because the colonies were receiving the benefit of the British troops and needed to help pay for the expense.The colonists were mostly upset because they felt that they should have representation in the English government.

    The Townshend Acts

    These were a series of laws passed by the British government on the American colonies in 1767. They placed new taxes and took away some freedoms from the colonists. The new taxes weere on imports of paper, paint, lead, glass, and tea. The colonists reacted by boycotting these products. These taxes further fueled the colonists anger over having no voice in the English government.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre was a deadly riot that occurred on King Street in Boston. It began as a street brawl between American colonists and a lone British soldier, but quickly escalated. 5 colonists were killed. It helped to unite the colonies against Britain and became a turning point in the beginnings of the American Revolution. After the Boston Massacre, the colonists reestablished the committees of correspondence.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party was a protest by the Sons of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts. The colonists were angry over being taxed without representation in Englands Parliament. They stole aboard 3 ships loaded with tea from England and dumped 342 chest of tea from the British East India Company into the waters of the Boston Harbor. This act fueled the tensions between England and her American colonies. After the Boston Tea Party the British ended all Townshend Act taxes except for the tax on tea.
  • The Intolerable ACts (The Coercive Acts)

    Four laws passed by the British to punish the colony of Massachusetts Bay for the Boston Tea Party: Boston Port Act closed the port of Boston to all ships until colonists paid for dumped tea; Massachusetts Government Act gave more power to the governor (appointed by England) and took away power from colonists; Administration of Justice Act allowed the governor to move capital trials against government officials to Great Britain; Quartering Act said the colonies had to provide rooms for soldiers.
