Road to Revolution

  • Analysis -Thesis and Reason/Main Point 1.

The Hessians were not a necessity to the British Parliment during the Revolutionary War.
"Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown decided the fate of the Revolutionary War" (282, Lowell).
Quote represents how the British could have continued this war and potentially won; however, their surrender made the hiring of the Hessians useless.
  • Analysis - Reason/Main Point 2.

"In the course of that time about thirty thousand soldiers were brought over, and seventeen thousand three hundred and thirteen returned to Germany when the war was ended" (282).
Quote from the book represesnts how the Hessians were a major casualty to the war and that since the surrender of Cornwallis took place, the deaths of these mercanaries were pointless, and that almost half of them were decimated in the process.
  • Analysis - Reason/Main Point 3.

My final point will be addressing the overall conflict if the Hessians did not enter the Revolutionary War.
Through my reading, I found that it wouldn't have changed much; however, the Hessians did help the British, just not enoigh to make signifigant differences in the war.
The quote, "The desperate battle continued"(149). for example represented how the British and the Colonies were "desperate" for the victory, so when the colonies called for the French's help during the Battle of Yorktown...
  • Analysis - Reason/Main Point 2 cont.

... the parliment then "needed" to counter with the hiring of Hessians.
As seen at the end of the war, the surrender and the casualties, the desperation of winning wasn't strong enough to continue the war and potentially win; therefore, the hiring of Hessians would not have been needed to counter as long as the British continued the war.
