    Magna Carta

    The Magna Carta was signed by King John at Runnymede near Windsor Castle in England. The magna carta is thought of as human rights. Among them was the right of the church to be free from governmental interference, the rights of all citizens to own and inherit property and to be protected from excessive taxes. It established the right of widows who owned property to choose not to remarry, and established principles of due process and equality before the law.
  • Mayflower Compact

    The purpose of the Mayflower Compact was to prevent disagreements between the Puritans and non-separatist Pilgrims who had landed at Plymouth. It was the first written framework of government established in what is now the United States.
  • Petition of Rights

    This Petition gave the English people to these things. 1. That they wouldn't be taxed unless the government consented the taxation. 2. That troops could not be quartered in their house. 3. That someone was innocent until proven guilty. Charles I signed the Petition
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    The English Bill of Rights was signed by William and Mary of England. Many different specific rights were given to the people, such as: the freedom of speech, freedom to petition the monarch without fear of retribution, and no excessive bail or "cruel and unusual" punishments may be imposed.
  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian WarThree major groups fought over North America during the French and Indian War: Great Britain, France, and the American Indians. Some of the major battles were the Battle of Fort Necessity, The Battle of the Wilderness, the Battle at Oswego, the Massacre at Fort William Henry, the Battle at Fort Louisburg, and the Capture of Quebec. The British ended up winning the war and were granted territorial claims in the New World. The colonists realized they now had to unite against a common foe.
  • Albany Plan of Union

    The Albany Plan of Union was suggested by Benjamin Franklin. However, it never actually happened. There was a popular political cartoon that was a woodcut of a severed snake entitled "Join or Die".

    The British Parliment placed taxes on paper goods sent to the US colonies. Colonial leaders were furious by this and people refused to buy the goods.

    Five colonists died as a result of the Boston Massacre. One of the leading causes to the Boston Massacre was the Townshed Acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    The British passed these Acts in response to the Boston Tea Party in Massachusetts. The British had hoped that by stripping Massachusetts of their self-government rights that they would strike fear into the US colonies and stop their resistance.

    Boston Tea Party
    The Sons of Liberty were a well-organized Patriot paramilitary political organization that was influential in organizing the Boston Tea Party. The British responded by creating the Intolerable Acts of 1774 which closed the Boston Ports and destroyed the Massachusetts government.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    Important state representives met in Philadelphia to discuss what to do about the British military involvement in the US. Patrick Henry was a key speaker in the Congress. The conclusion of the congress was to boycott British goods that were imported and also possibly stop exporting to Britian if the British military involvement did not cease. This Congress met at Carpenters' Hall in Philadelphia
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    The battles of Lexington and Concord were the first of the American Revolutionary war. The result of these conflicts was continued battle between sides. The Patriots were suprised at their ablility to defend themselves. The British leaders in these battles were Colonel Smith, Major Pitcairne and Lord Percy. The major leaders for the militias were Barrett, Buttrick, Robinson. Paul Revere was the first to alert the Patriot Militia that British troops were advancing towards them.
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    The Second Continental Congress took place at the Pennsylvania State House in Philadelphia. The Declaration of Independance was brainstormed and created at this Congress. Some colonial leaders involved were Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and President of the congress Peyton Randolph

    The purpose of the Constitutional Convention was to adress the problems in governing the US. The Convention lasted until September 17th 1787
