  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was a parliamentary measures designed to increase Great Britain's profits from the sugar trade in the colonies. It placed tariffs on sugar, wine, coffee, and other items imported by the colonies.
    In reaction to this the colonists boycotted the goods that were being taxed by the British.

    The British repealed this act in 1766 because the boycotts were hurting them financially.

  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act required every legal document to be written on specially stamped paper, showing proof of payment. In addition, newspaper, dice, and playing cards also had to bear proof of tax payment.
    The colonists had widespread boycotts and harassed the tax collectors.
    The Stamp Act was repealed the following year by the British government.

    The Quartering Act required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies. If they were too small to house all the soldiers, then localities were to make room for them. It also taxed colonist for provisions and barracks for the army.
    The colonists saw no purpose for the army and didn't want to help them, so some refused to obey it.
    The British government prohibited the assemblies from meeting until they obeyed.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    This act proclaimed Parliament's ability "to bind the colonies in all cases whatsoever." It was to remind them that they were under British rule, and had little or no authority over themselves.
    The colonist found this threatening. They knew that this meant that they had no rights to govern themselves in any sense.
    The Declaratory Act was Britain's response to the repeal of the Stamp Act.

    The Townshend Act consisted of four measures enacted to raise revenue to pay the salaries of British governors and other colony officials; it taxed a variety of imports, including glass, paints, paper, tea, etc
    The colonists boycotted British goods being taxed and signed a nonimportation agreement. They also harassed tax collectors and protested.

    Until the Boston Massacre, the British didn't do much to counter the colonists' protests, after it they repealed most of the taxes under this Act.
