    my father was an avid horror fan, and these books got me excited to read (with him in particular). reading became a fun bonding experience.

    my grandfather would send bi weekly emails, and created a sort of game where he would request information on a certain topic.My job was then to either read a book or find information online, and write to him back about this. This exchange fostered information synthesizing and comprehension skills i would need later in life for more difficult reading tasks.

    my grandparents frequently brought me to museums, and purchased a book on one of the exhibits I was interested in. Seeing things first-hand and having background knowledge made me interested in the books they bought me.

    growing up I struggled greatly with spelling, and remember being completely embarrassed by a teacher while attempting to spell in front of others. Having my struggles pointed out publicly created a shyness around sharing my writing, despite the enjoyment I had when writing or reading.

    took writing class in high school that required us to complete a NaNoWrimo (national writers month; complete a novel length story in 1 month). This taught me a lot about story structure.
