This step begins the process to see if the student qualifies for Assistve Technology (AT). It can be an initial or existing referral made by a parent, teacher, or physician, A decision is made based on the following: student data or personal information, medical data for vital concerns, vision and hearing reports, information about any technology or equipment currently in use, background information regarding any related services provided previously for the student.
-
In this step, an AT specialist will spend time with the student by directly observing them to record the following: cognitive skills, current use of any AT devices, sensory skills, motor skills, and communication skills. The AT specialist will interview the people that the student has daily contact with. This is when they gather information like: family concerns, perceived needs and abilities of the student, academic expectations, diagnostic and medical information. A formal assessment is made.
-
In this step, an IEP team decides and implements any devices that may help a student with their learning outcome. This device is in the trial stage and will need to be monitored by a qualified individual.
-
In this step, all the data is collected and the device is implemented. The student receives continuous support from related services and anyone else involved in the AT device.
