Rebirth and Revolution - Eastern Asia. While East Asia was building their nation, both conflict and expansion occurred in dynamic proportions, while other aspects of life in this region stayed the same.

  • Communism in Vietnam

    Communism was still prominent in Vietnam, although there were advocates who were against it. This is continuity because Communism stayed in Vietnam and all opposing groups (like the VNQDD) were terminated.
  • New Divisions

    After World War II, Korea, China, Vietnam, Malaysa, Indonesia and the Philippines were all split up differently than before by Western Europe and the United States. This is a change because new boarders were created that were not previously there.
  • Japanese Recovery

    After World War II, Japan was a mess due to America's dropping of the atomic bombs. The U.S. helped Japan reform their political structure. This is continuity because Japan had continued to be able to reestablish economy without outside help.
  • North Koren State-Building

    North Korea focused on their one ruler, Kim. He controlled everything from education to the military. This is continuity because North Korea continued its authoritarian form of government.
  • South Korean State-Building

    South Korea teamed up with the United States to form a kind of government they had never perviously had. The military ran the government with financial aid from the U.S. This is a change because it was a new form of government to help them build the nation.
  • The Korean War

    In an attempt to unify the two nations, North Korea attacked South Korea. This war was a change because if it weren't for the division of Korea, the two nations would sitll be one and there would be no need to go to war against each other.
  • The Liberal Democratic Party

    The Liberal Democratic Party was created in 1955 to help monopolize Japan's government. Japan embraced the multiparty rule. This is a change because to help build the nation, they had to have a different form of government they had mever experienced before.
  • The Communists Come to Power

    The Soviet Union and China rose together (Russia having a slight upper-hand) to control surrounding nations. The Communist nations worked together to settle disputes and mark new territory. This was a change becuase China and the Soviet Union were not previously civil towards each other.
  • The Great Leap Forward

    The Great Leap Forward was created to help industrialize reform projects into rural areas. Although this change led to economic disaster, it was still a step to learning what it took to create a better nation.
  • Rebuilding Vietnam

    Vietnam has been working towards rebuilding the society. After their liberation, the country has been working towards an non-Communist government. This is a change because by working with other nations, Vietman is able to try a new governemt form.
