Reading Timeline

  • Childrens Bible

When I was about 6 or 7 years old my mother would read the children's Bible to my sister and I. Her reading the Bible to use encouraged me to want to get to know who God really was.
  • 2nd Grade

I can remember at the end of every day my 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Smith would sit with us in a big circle and just read to us before it was time to go. Her voice was so soothing and calm it made me just wasnt to fall asleep. It made me correlate reading with being peaceful.
  • Series of Unfortunate Events

When I was in elementary school I would read a book every now and then. In 5th grade my teacher started a book study with the class. She introduced the book series A Series of Unfortunate Events. I feel in love with the book and could not stop reading it. Reading the series made me want to see if there was any other fictional books that would spark my interest.
  • Middle School

Because in 6th grade we were not allowed to participate in sports in school we had to find other things to do to waste time. This is around the time were I started my interest in reading magazines, J-14 was a magazine that all my friends were into.
  • Last TAKS Test

My 11th grade year when I took my final TAKS test. It was so relieving because English was my least favorite subject. I did not enjoy reading anymore and I found myself hating using reading strategies just to read a simple paragraph. It may have been the fact that in high school I did not enjoy my English teachers because all they taught us was that we need to pass the TAKS test.
  • First Child

Having my daughter at a young age encouraged me to want to start readnig like I used to. Even though I knew she was a little baby and did not understand waht I was reading I believed reading to her would stimulate her growth.
  • 1st Semester of College

The day I learned that I had to take a remedial course for English is when I really began to hate reading. My TAKS score was not high enough so I had to take the course. Knowing that the course was basically a waste of money because it did not count towards my degree left a bad taste in my mouth. I did very little I only wanted to get a C just to move on.
  • English 1302

Though of course I could not stand English classes this particular class really helped me break down readings and understand the puropses of the things that we read about. I could now take one paragraph out of a reading and break down the authors thoughts.
  • Becoming a Teacher

Becoming a middle school teacher taught me that student of this generation are behind in reading comprehension. I now find myself looking for new, and innovative ways to improve the ways students can learn to understand what they are reading.
  • Masters

Entering my masters degree I now find it harder to want to read. Alot of the information that i need to read I find it being boring. Alot of times I will just have to skim through information to understand as much as I can.
