    Birthday
My parents began reading to me the day I was born. My mom loves to read and believed that reading could never start too early.

    Pre-K
At Pre-K, Mrs. Susan would read us stories each afternoon before our nap time. She would help us to learn new words to begin the process of learning to read in kindergarden.
  • Kindergarden

    Kindergarden
When I began Kindergarden, Mrs. Morris was always encouraging us to learn new words and ask questions. We had a word wall that we had to practice reading each day with her help. Each week she would read us a new book to help us pick up new words. She was always so kind and encouraging that I wanted to become a reader.

    Public Library Card
My mom took me to Lovett Memorial Library to sign up for my first library card. Once a week my mom would take my siblings and I to the library to spend some time reading, participating in kid book clubs, and to check out books to take home for the week.

  • Accelerated Reading

    Accelerated Reading
In 3rd grade, we were required to being reading for points. Each student had a reading goal for each week/month/year. When we reached a certain number of points we were rewarded for our efforts. Using the A.R. program I was motivated to read each day. My parents helped me to understand parts of books that were more difficult. I loved winning the prizes as well!
  • Hank the Cowdog

    Hank the Cowdog
For Christmas, my parents bought me the set of Hank the Cowdog books that I began to read each night before I went to bed. I vividly remember these being some of my favorite books I ever received.
  • Beowulf

    Beowulf
During 7th grade English is the time I began to not enjoy reading anymore. Reading was not for fun but for learning. The books we began to read were becoming more difficult and it was hard to relate the text to real life situations. Reading Beowulf was one of my worst experiences with reading. We not only had to read the book on our own, the amount of classwork that came with it made the entire experience unenjoyable.
  • The Grapes of Wrath

    The Grapes of Wrath
My 11th grade English teacher, assigned the Grapes of Wrath book to be read before the first day of school. I did not enjoy reading in the summer, especially a book that was to be used for academic purposes.
  • The Great Gatsby

    The Great Gatsby
In my Junior English class, my teacher assigned The Great Gatsby to the class. We listened to the book on tape each class period. After each chapter, we would stop and discuss and complete assignments related to the book. This was one of my favorite books to read in school. I enjoyed it so much because it was on tape.
  • Oklahoma State University

    Oklahoma State University
I began college this year and little did I know how much reading would be required. For my physics class, I did not enjoy reading the textbook because of the complexity of the material. On the other hand, reading textbooks for my athletic training classes allowed me to become engaged and relate the information I learned to real life experiences. So, being able to read material that related to my career was intriguing to me.

    Senior Year at OSU
During my final semester at OSU, we focused mainly on reading and interpreting peer reviewed articles. I learned how to sor through the information to make sense of it all. Because of a project I did over the effects of social media within athletics, I now have a drive to read peer review articles. I enjoy being able to learn the newest and up to date information to be a top athletic trainer.
