Reading Autobiography Timeline

    Nightly Routine
Every night when I would get in bed, my mom would read me a “goodnight story”. These ranged from humorous, educational, and historical books for children. No matter what book it was, I was always intrigued in what my mom was reading.

  • My Very First Book

    My Very First Book
I remember the very first book she bought specifically for me, “Dick and Jane”. When I first attempted to read this book, I remember struggling with the word “something”, but my mom was very patient with me when learning this word. This was first book I was able to read to her at night, and with a little help, I was able to read the entire book a loud.

    Anyone Who Would Listen
When I finally grasped the concept of reading, my sister and I read books to each other at night. When my sister would get annoyed by my reading, I would set up my American Girl Dolls and stuffed animals on my bed and read to them, as they wouldn’t complain.
  • Elementary School

    Elementary School
I remember my teachers in elementary school reading a short story to us each morning at “circle time”. I looked forward to this because I loved other people reading to me. When I entered 4th grade, we read a book as a class that was a little bit longer, but I was still super excited to hear my teacher and classmates read these books as we did “popcorn reading”.
  • Summer Reading

    Summer Reading
But middle school was also when I was introduced to summer reading… this felt more like a chore considering I wasn’t able to choose what book I wanted to read so the motivation wasn’t there. Reading during the summer sounded awful to me since this is when my brain was supposed to be shut off from learning, or so I thought.
  • Book Club

    Book Club
When I entered middle school, I was introduced to a book club that one of the language arts teachers was in charge of. I thought this was super fun because I was able to meet with other peers and hear their opinions and thoughts on the books. I remember reading a mystery book in book club and I was so excited for our meetings to hear what everyone thought about the mystery and who everyone thought committed crime.
  • High School

    High School
Once I entered high school, I lost my love for reading. It was mainly due to the fact that I didn’t have much down time since I was involved in sports, a job, completing homework assignments, and all of the fun extracurricular activities that came along with high school. I read every now and then when books were required for classes.
  • College

    College
But it wasn’t until college when I started reading again. I really got into romance novels for a while my freshman year. But I am currently reading a lot of motivational, self-help kind of books. College is stressful, and these books allow me to pick up whenever it is convenient and not have to worry about where I left off. They also keep me feeling confident and help me stay motivated which is much needed in college!
