    Birth of Alexandria Victoria
    Victoria was born on May 24, 1819 in the Kensington Palace in London. Victoria was the only daughter of Edward, Duke of Kent, and Victoria Maria Louisa of Saxe-Coburg. Victoria's father passed away soon after her birth which made her heir to the throne since Edward's brothers had no children. This is significant because Victoria would eventually become the queen of England.

    Victoria becomes Queen of England
    When Victoria's father died, her uncle William IV took over the throne. On June 20, 1837, William IV passed away and Victoria succeeded the throne. The day of her coronation she wore rich robes and a crown full of jewels. Celebrations lasted for four days. This is significant because as queen, Victoria would restore the prestige and create a modern and industrial

    Victoria marries Albert Edward
    Victoria marries her first cousin(this was not uncommon) Albert Edward. Since she was the queen, she had to propose to him, whch she did four days after meeting him. Although their first couple of years together were full of fights, overall they had a happy mariagge. This is significant because Albert would help Victoria make important decisions and open the Great Exhibiton.

  • First daughter, Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa was born

    First daughter, Victoria Adelaide Mary Louisa was born
    Her first child, known as Vicky, was born. Whne she is older, Vicky becomes the Empress of Germany. Although Queen Victoria hated pregnancy, she has nine children altogether. Her children will connect the British royal house to Germany, Russia, Greece, Denmark, and Romania through marriages.

    Anesthetics in surgery
    A patient in Boston is given ether as an anesthetic, a revolution in surgical practice. Ether is a pleasant-smelling, colorless and highly flammable liquid. It can be vaporized into a gas that numbs pain but leaves the patient conscious. This is significant because it will be used in surgical practices and will lead to a high survival rate.

    Crystal Palace Exhibition
    Through Alberts patronage, the great exhibition was held to immense population. The exhibition showcased the technological wonders of the century as well as the fruits of the empire. The crystal palace represented the high mark of Victoria's reign and was the symbol of the age. It was significsnt because it encouraged trade amongst different

    Napoleon III
    Louis-Napoleon is declared Emperor Napoleon III. Napoleon III hoped to modernize France. France is no longer a republic and is called the Second Empire. This is significant because Louis-Napoleon was a new leader and would make changes that affected France and other countries.

    The royal family was suspected of being pro-russian during the Crimean War. Victoria countered this by displaying the Victoria Cross for the miltary. The cross represented military bravery and showed support for war-relief efforts. This is significant because it increased her popularity and showcased that Europe was against Russia.

    Charles Darwin
    Basing the idea from the theory about geology by Charles Lyell, Charles Darwin develops a theory of evolutionary selection and specialization. Darwin described the process of natural selection and gave examples of it. His theory of evolution had the most impact on the Victorian public. This is significant because it would convince most scientists and other educated people in the late 19th century that life forms do change through time.

    Albert, Victoria's husband, dies
    Albert dies of typhoid fever. After his death, Victoria dissapears from the public and is not seen at public affairs for over 3 years. For the rest of her life, she wore black to mourn her beloved huband. This is significant because it would affect Victoria for the rest of life and she would no longer be dependent on him.

    The telephone is invented
    Alexander Graham Bell invents the telephone. The telephone enabled people to be able to communicate from local and far distances. Many people considered this to be the most important invention of the nineteenth century. This is significant because it allowed instant communication between people in different places.

    After Britian reinforces its control over India, Victoria become the Empress. Although she never actually visited India, she was very interested in the welfare of her colonial subjects. This is significant because it showed that Victoria's power was not limited to Britian and that she had influence all over the world.

    Diamond Jubilee
    Victoria celebrates her sixty year anniversary as queen. Victoria was seventy-eight years old, but did her best to net let her age get in the way of celebrations. The Diamond Jubilee was held at Windsor Ccastle. This event is significant because Victoria's reign was one of the longest in history.

    Victoria's death
    On her death bed, Victoria was surrounded by her children and grand-children. She had 37 surviving great-grandchildren, and their marriages with other monarchies gave her the name “grandmother of Europe.” Victoria was eighty-one years old when she passed away and had reigned for almost sixty-four years. This is significant because it marked the end of an era and the beginning of Edward VII's reign.
