The Zhou Dynasty, much like Europe at that time, was largely run by feudalism. As time went on, the Zhou King lost control over the other states and they began to gain independence and then fight among themselves for land. The Warring States Period ended when the Qin State took control over the other states, creating the Qin Dynasty.

In 221 BCE, the Qin State conquered the last of the remaining states and formed the Qin Dynasty. The Qin State was significantly more powerful then the surrounding states, with access to trade networks, a strategic advantage coming from its geography, a powerful army and thought-out tactics allowing them to persevere.

Despite its short length, the Qin Dynasty unified China and was the first dynasty. The Qin Empire was essential to China's history and its lasting impacts can still be seen today.

After the attempted cover-up of the death of Qin Shi Huang, the dynasty faced a civil war between those still loyal to the emperor and those fighting against the corrupt government. The rebels prevailed and Han Dynasty began, officially marking the end of the Qin Dynasty.
