  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    With the fear that Satan targeted illiterate people, Mass. made it law that a town with 50 families or more hire an educator for the towns youth. The need for educated citizens began here in the colonies.
  • First Normal School

    The first school for teaching educators. With teachers becoming more educated students are granted a better education. Today educators are still required a post secondary education.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    This court ruling allowed States to segregate public facilities. The Supreme Court argued that people of color are allowed the same public facilities but can be seperated from whites. Segregation of schools fueled perception that whites were superior in young students and ultimately meant poorer education, in most cases, for minorities.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Brown V. Board of Education eliminated segregation in public schools. This has granted access to higher levels of education to minority groups.
  • Sputnik

    With the Soviets' launching the first satalite, the United States put one billion dollars into school systems to focus on math and science.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    As Part of President Johnson's war on poverty, the ESEA started Head Start, gave free lunches to those and need, and gave greater attention to special education. This allowed continued opportunity for education.
  • How Children fail

    Holt's book explained how public education was not facilitating the best environment for learning. Teaching styles began to change.
  • Title 9

    Title 9 stated that no person can be excluded from a school program on the basis of their sex. This gave rise to more women athletics and other opportunities which previously were not granted.
  • National Commision on Excellence in Education

    This commision was devised to up student test scores in math, reading, and writing. Teachers are no responsible for prepairing their students for those tests.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    This Act set new government test standards that students must reach or the school district may face federal assistance money. This program was set in to help disadvantaged students reach the same goals as advanted students. Some people believe teachers are now teaching to strictly meet those standards.
