Eugene debs was a stong supporter of socialist ideals, such and the government controlling essential buisnesses and keeping them small, so that workers arent as likely to be exploited.

    H.G. Welles
    H.G. Welles was a Science fiction writer, and is often thought of as only second to Iassic Asimov in the Sci Fi genra. He is also the Father of Tripods as alien attack vehicles. Wells used science fiction to represent the problems he saw in society. In his famous book, "The Time Machine", he depicts a future in wich a wealthy race lounges around in luxury slaves live underground making the clothes and furnishings of the people above. later the time traveler goes forward, discoving a wasteland

    Upton sinclair was a muckraker author. he wrote The Jungle, a famous novel that exposed the slimy insides of the meat packing industry. His novel led to several reforms such as the creation of the FDA.

    La Follette was a leader in the progressive movement. he ran for presidency in 1924, but lost to Calvin Coolidge. He belived that citizens should have a larger role in the government. he also proposed taxes on such things as the railroads.

    He ran against Taft in the 1908 election. He had run two times previously, and this was his third try. He was opposed to entering WWI. He also criticized The upper class for supporting the gold standard.

    Things like trustbusting and prohibiting monopolies. Most of the reforms were aimed to help consupers, so that they could afford neccicary products to live comfortably.

    Hiram Johnson was the governer of california in 1910 and was reelected in 1914, after running for vice president under Roosevelt. afterwards, he was elected to the senate and was there from 1917 to 1945. He was strongly against the southern pacific railroad, and pushed for womens suffrage.

    The progressives fought for public service reform, so that the public was helped by the government, instead of the wealthy controlling the officials in public office.

    Many prominent figures of the proggressive movemnt fought for this. They saw corruption as a waste in government.

    Theodore Roosevelt
    Roosevelt became president when Mckinley was assassinated. He was elected as vice president by conservatives who felt he was too progressive. In 1912, he ran under the proggressive party, but lost to taft. He set aside hundres of thousands of acres of land for state parks.

    Woodrow wilson was the president, following Taft. He thought of himself as the "personal representative of the people", much like Roosevelt. He fought for progressive reforms, and convinced, in his first term, a largly democratic condress to pass very progressive refoms.

    This amendment made it so that senators are elected via popular vote. This way, the senators were more likely to represent the interests of the people.

    The 19th amendment made it so that women could vote.

    this encompassed such reforms as prohibition. supporters belived that alchohol was damaging to families and morality.

    Charles Evans Hughes was the secretary of state from 1921 to 1925. He was from new york and was a prominent figure even before he was appionted to be secretary of state. He was important in moving new york away from the laissez-faire wayof buisness and improved the standard of living.

    Addams was a social reformer, and established the hull house. she graduated from the rockford female semnary, and got a degree when it became rockford college. she also recived the nobell peace prize in 1931.

    Labor reform was a large part of progressive policies. Reforms such as the prevention of child labor and the implementation of a minimum wage. It wasnt untill 1938 that child labor was outlawed.
