Progressive Era Reforms Timeline

  • Pendleton Act

    Pendleton Act
    The government could hold competitive exams to award jobs. This was an easier way for the public to get jobs as government officials. People liked this because now they could have a higher authority then if they were a normal worker.
  • Meat Inspection Act

    Meat Inspection Act
    This an act to make the misbranding of meat or meat products that are being sold as a food product illegal. Meat/meat products that are sold as food must be slaughtered and processed in a sanitary way. This law also applies to imported meat products.
  • Pure Food & Drug Act

    Pure Food & Drug Act
    This banned the selling of mislabeled food and drug products. This law also required that companies put the active ingredients on the product. Drugs also needed to be above the purity level.
  • Antiquities Act

    Antiquities Act
    The people cannot live on what is considered special land. It can be preserved for archeology and other necessary needs by the federal government. This made people mad because they wanted all the land to themselves for a good place to settle or start a business.
  • 16th Amendment

    16th Amendment
    The government has the power to put taxes on certain goods, and collect income tax. They can do this without the consent of the states.
  • 17th Amendment

    17th Amendment
    The senate of the United States of America will have two representatives of each state. These senators will be chosen by the people, and they will have one vote each. A senator can serve up to six years in a term. They will require certain qualifications in order to be a candidate for election.
  • Clayton Antitrust Act

    Clayton Antitrust Act
    Companies could no longer hold or lock other companies just so that they can become the biggest company. They also could not hold a monopoly, or try to create a monopoly. Companies could not cut prices or raise prices
  • Keating-Owen Child Labor Act

    Keating-Owen Child Labor Act
    This law made the factory owners reduce the amount of work hours for young children. Owners can’t sell products made by anyone under the age of 14. Mines can’t sell products that anyone under 16 made. Children under the age of 16 could no longer work at night, and they could not work for more than 8 hours a day.
  • 18th Amendment

    18th Amendment
    The 18th amendment made it illegal to produce, sell, or transport alcohol.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    The 19th Amendment was passed to ensure the right of voting to any person regardless of their sex. These people must be citizens to the United States of America. Woman were disallowed to vote for many years, and had many movements until the government finally decided to allow the women rights.
