Progressive Era

  • The Panic of 1893

    A year or two after the Progressive Era began, there was a serious economic depression which started in 1893. The panic included hundreds of banks closing and prevented businesses to open because of the lack of workers. Link text
  • Working Women

    By the 1900, more and more women started receiving chances to work. Before this time it was known for women to be not welcome in the work force. Although, those times have change and most would work in garment trade, offices, department stores, and classrooms.
  • Trusts

    In 1900, Trusts were created as legal bodies to hold stock for many companies and controlled 80% of the industries in the U.S. Although, Roosevelt was antitrust and once he become President soon after Trusts were formed, he filed about 44 suits.
  • The American Socialist Party

    Eugene Debs organized the American Socialist Party in 1901 to support the act of socialism. Around this time, most workers decided to embrace socialism and Debs encouraged people to reject American Capitalism.
  • President McKinley Assassination

    In President William McKinley's 6th month into his second term, he was assassinated in Buffalo on September 6th, 1901. Shortly after this happen, Theodore Roosevelt replaces McKinley and becomes the 26th President of the United States.
  • Coal Strike

    In Pennsylvania, coal miners decided to go on strike to get increased wages, 9-hour work days, and the right unionize. Although, the mine owners did not budge but Roosevelt did try and get both sides together to resolve the problem.
  • The Meat Inspection Act

    After Roosevelt was recommended to read the book "The Jungle" by Uptown Sinclair about the secrets of meat processing factories, he decides to create an act for stricter food regulations. The act was to maintain clean conditions in meatpacking plants for sanitary reasons.
  • William Howard Taft

    In 1908, William Howard Taft won the presidential election against William Jennings Bryan. During his term, one of his great accomplishments was that he broke 90 trusts for companies. Taft was in office for 4 years but was not the most popular person with the American public and later loses his power.
  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

    In 1909, the NAACP was formed including people who were African American and prominent white reformers. The reason of the organization was to promote rights for people like them and as well as full equality for all races. By 1914, they had become very popular and about 6,000 people were part of the organization.
  • 1912 Election

    The 1912 election was the presidential election between William Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, and Democrat Woodrow Wilson. Republicans had some trouble on who to nominate to represent them but in the end decided on William Taft. Although, some of the republicans formed their own party and nominated Roosevelt. On election day, Democrat Woodrow Wilson won with 435 electoral votes.
  • The Clayton Antitrust Act

    During Wilson's term, congress enacted the Clayton Antitrust Act, which had the purpose to prevent companies from receiving stocks from other companies and was a sort of anti-monopoly act as well. The act also helped with the Sherman Act and that was a federal act to outlaw monopolistic business practices.
  • Federal Trade Commission

    The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) was formed in 1914 and its purpose was to end unfair business practices and as well protects consumers from fraud.
  • Child Labor

    In 1918, about all of the states in the U.S. banned companies to use children for labor work. Although, it was very common for children to work, reformers tried their best to stop the pattern of child labor. It was extremely dangerous for children to be working at the time because of how weak they are and would often get hurt.
  • Women's Rights Achieved

    In 1920, women finally got what they wanted and received the rights they deserved. All women of different backgrounds came together and participated in multiple protests for their rights to votes. The government gave in and formed the 19th Amendment to give the rights for women to votes and justice was served for everyone.
