    Roosevelt decided to break the tradition of a two-term presidency and run for reelection. At the same time, both Willkie and Roosevelt promised to keep the nation out of war. Because there was so little difference between the candidates, the majority of voters chose the one they knew best. Roosevelt was reelected with nearly 55 percent of the votes cast.

    germany italy and japan sign the "tripartite pact" officially becoming the Axis Powers. This alliance was formed to keep the US out of war. If they attacked one country in the axis, they must deal with all the countries.

  • Lease-Lend Act

    Lease-Lend Act
    Being that Britian had no money to spend on the arsenal of democracy, FDR came up with a new idea called the "Lease-Lend Policy." This policy was provided for, “any country whose defense was vital to the United States." There were a few isolationists who disagreed with this proposal, however, most Americans favored it. Finally it bacame a legal act, known offically as, "the Lease-Lend Act."

    Hitler broke his agreement not to invade the soviet union. Therefore, because of the lease-lend act, FDR started sendong over lease-lend supplies to help out the Soviet Union. They felt very well prepared because of the act and it's benefits. He supported Stalin.

    FDR and Winston Churchill met aboard the USS Agusta, (US battleship) to discuss the outcome of the war. they signed together the atlantic charter, which was a joint declariation of war goals. these gols included freedom of the seas, collective security, disarmament, economic cooperation, and self-dertermination. The US is now a further choosing to support the allies instead of the Axis Powers.

    Germans attack the Americans on sight
    German submarine fired on the U.S. destroyer Greer in the Atlantic. As this was a back and forth shooting/sinking of boats "trend" for lack of a better word, the death toll mounted and the Senate finallyrepealed the ban against arming merchant ships. Included the "shoot-on-sight" policy.

    On this day, Japan attacked us, along with Germany and Italy a couple of days later. Many former isolationists because siding with the "all-american effort." Happened in Hawaii. Famous quote, "A date that will live in infamy."
