  • Plankalkil

    Plankalkül was created by Konrad Zuse in 1945. Plankalkul was created for engineering purposes and its name mean “Plan Calculus”.
  • Fortran

    Fortran is a general-purpose imperative programing language that was created by IBM in the 1950s. It was developed for numeric and scientific computing and is currently one of the most popular programming languages applied to super computers.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was developed by John McCarthy in 1958 and is the second oldest high-level programming language still frequently used. Lisp is a family of computer programing languages and has under gone many changes and updates. Lisp received its name from "LISt Processing" which is one of Lisp’s most important data structures.
  • COBOL

    COBOL was developed in 1959 by the Conference on Data Systems Languages. It was created to be used within a business atmosphere and is largely based off of an older language developed by Grace Hopper. COBOL stands for Common Business-Oriented Language.
  • RPG

    RPG was created to be a high-level programming language by IBM in 1959. Its name is an acronym for “Report Program Generator”
  • BASIC

    John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz developed the original BASIC in 1964. Its name is an acronym for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. It was created around the center purpose of ease of use and is a group high-level program language.
  • Logo

    Logo was created in 1967 by Daniel G. Bobrow, Wally Feurzeig, Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon. Logo was created as an educational programming language and its name comes from Greek logos meaning word or "thought".
  • B

    B was created in 1969 by Ken Thompson with Dennis Ritchie. The letter B was used as a possible reference to Bon, and early and rather different program than B that Thompson had developed. B was developed for recursive, non-numeric, machine independent applications.
  • Pascal

    Pascal was released to the public in 1970 and was created by Niklaus Writh.Pasal and was developed as an imperative and procedural programming language. The name Pascal comes from the French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal.
  • SQL

    SQL stands for “Structured Query Language” and was created by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce in the 1970’s. SQL was create for managing data held within a relational database management system.
  • ML

    ML was created by Robin Milner in the 1970s. The name ML comes from “metalanguage”. ML’s main purpose is to create proof strategies within the LCF theorem prover.
  • C

    C was originally developed by Dennis Ritchie and was completed in 1973. C is an all-around general purpose programming language. It has found a long lasting place in the world of computer languages and many newer languages barrow from C.
  • Python

    Python was created to be a general-purpose, high-level programming language by Guido van Rossum in the late 1980’s.
  • Ada

    ADA was started by a team led by Jean Ichbiah and was completed in 1983. It is often referred to as Ada because its name comes from the first programmer, Ada Lovelace. Ada was created when the Department of Defense needed a programmer that could surpass the hundreds of current programs.
  • C++

    C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup and was released in 1985. Stoustrup was yearning for a flexible, efficient language that would also allow him to utilize high level features for program organization. Stroustrup’s “C with Classes” was renamed C++ in 1983.
  • PHP

    PHP was created to be used for web development but it may also be used for general programming. PHP was created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1994 and its name stands for Hypertext Preprocessor.
  • Delphi

    Delphi was created by Borland and is meant to be used as a rapid application development tool for Windows. Delphi was released to the public in 1995.
  • Java

    Java was created as a concurrent, class-based, object-oriented programming language by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton and was released to the public in 1995. Its name is said to come from Java coffee because of the large amounts of Java Coffee that the three creators consumed.
  • JavaScript

    JavaScript is a multi-paradigm language, supporting object-oriented, imperative, and functional programming styles and is most commonly used with web pages. JavaScript was created by Brendan Eich and was released in beta-in September of 1995.
  • 1957

    MATH-MATIC was created by a group which was led by Charles Katz in the year 1957. Its purpose was to serve as an improvement for Fortran. MATH-MATIC was chosen as its marketing name.
  • Visual Basic

    Visual Basic was created largely off of BASIC and was designed to be an easy to learn and use language. VB was created to allow rapid application development, development of ActiveX controls, and objects and Remote Data Objects. Microsoft first released VB in 1991.
