The working class was living on Bread, butter, potatoes, and bacon. More plain foods because butchers meat was a luxury.

Railroads and steamships were used to transport cheaper grains from North America so bread could become cheaper.

The first refrigeration machine was invented in 1805 by Oliver Evans. This helped methods of refrigeration to improve and in 1882 refrigerated meat was brought from New Zealand to Britain for the first time. Fred W Wolfe invented the refrigerator for use in the home in 1913. The first electric toaster was invented in Britain in 1893 by Crompton and Co. The pop-up toaster was invented by Charles Strite in 1919. These inventions helped to improve the diet of most.

Ordinary people ate better food in the 20th century, yet, food was also expensive because of rationing for the war. Sweets were considered as more of a luxury and there were many more options about cooking and storing foods.

Ordinary people began to eat a wider variety of food in the late 20th century. That was partly because fridges, freezers and later microwave ovens became common. Several new types of food were invented in the 20th century. This is when we started to eat more "Fast Foods"
