He eventually sent a northern ship to reinforce Fort Sumpter, but then reverted to staying out of things until the end of his office.

    Lincoln is remembered for his role as the leader in preserving the Union during the Civil War and beginning the process of freeing the slaves. His speech, the Emancipation Proclaimation, set many slaves in slaves states "free." He led the Union side in the Civil War, winning against the Confederate States and reclaiming their territory.
