Prenatal Development

  • Month 1

    Month 1
    • The baby is now the size of a pin head.
    • The egg has attached to lining of uterus.
    • This is the critical stage for brain and spinal cord development.
    • Internal organs and circulatory system has begun to form.
    • The heart has begun to beat.

  • Month 2

    Month 2
    • The baby is now about 1/4 of an inch long.
    • The face, eyes, ears, and limbs take shape.
    • The bones have begun to form.

    • breats begin to swell
    • pressure on bladder from enlarging uterus results in need to urinate more frequently
    • possible nausea (morning sickness)
    • fatigue is common
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    • The baby is now about 1 inch long.
    • The nostrils, mouth, lips, teeth buds, and eyelids have begun to form.
    • The fingers and toes are almost complete.
    • All of the organs are present now, although immature.

    • breasts become firmer and fuller, may ache
    • nausea, fatigue, and frequent urination may continue
    • abdomen becomes slightly larger. the uterus is about the size of an orange.
    • weight gain may total 2-4 pounds
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    • The baby is now about 3 inches long and 1 ounce.
    • The baby can now suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup and move around.
    • The baby's facial features are becoming clearer.

    • abdomen continues to grow slowly
    • most discomforts of early pregnancy, such as morning sickness, usually gone

  • Month 5

    Month 5
    • The baby is now 6 1/2 to 7 inches long, weighing about 4 to 5 ounces.
    • The baby's hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows are appearing.
    • The baby's teeth are continuing to develop.
    • The baby's organs are maturing.
    • The baby is becoming more active.
  • 5 months pregnant belly

    • enlarged abdomen becomes apparent
    • slight fetal movements felt
    • increased size may begin to affect posture
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    • The baby is about 8 to 10 inches long and 8 to 12 ounces.
    • The fat is depositing under skin, but will appear wrinkled.
    • The breathing movements have begun.

    • fetal movements sensed as strong kicks, thumps, and bumps. some may be visible
    • weight gain may be the beginning of this month may total 10-12 pounds
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    • The baby is about 10 to 12 inches long and 1 1/2 to 2 pounds
    • The periods of activity followed by periods of rest and quiet.

  • Month 8

    Month 8
    • The baby is 14 to 16 inches long and 2 1/2 to 3 pounds.
    • The weight gain is continuing rapidly.
    • The baby may react to loud noices with a reflex jerking action.
    • The baby is moving into a head-down position.

    • discomfort may result from increased size. backache, leg cramps, shortless of breath, and fatigue are common

    • at the beginning of this month, weight gain totals about 18-20 pounds
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    • The baby is 17 to 18 inches long and weighs 5 to 6 pounds.
    • The weight gain continues until the week before birth.
    • The skin becomes smooth as fat deposits continue.
    • The movements decrease as the fetus has less room to move around.
    • The baby aquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mother's blood.
    • The baby will descend into pelvis, ready for birth.

    • "lightening" felt as the fetus drops into the pelvis. breathing becomes easier

    • a total weight gain of 25-35 pounds
