    U.S. Senate. Congressman Preston Brooks, who advocated for enslavement, attacked Sen. Charles Sumner with a cane after Sumner had given a speech condemning the pro-enslavement forces for the violence occurring in Kansas.

    Following Lincoln's Election in 1860 seven states including South Carolina seceded from the Union. South Carolina believed that even though Lincoln's view of enslavement was moderate for the time period, slavery would most likely be abolished after he was elected.
