Pregnancy Timeline

  • Month 1

    The baby is the size of a pin head. The egg attaches to lining of uterus. Brain and spinal cord begin developing as well as internal organs and circulatory system. The heart begins to beat.
  • Month 2

    The baby is about 1/4 of an inch long and bones begin to form. The face, eyes, ears, and limbs take shape.
  • Month 3

    The fetus is about 1 inch long. The nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form and the buds for all baby teeth appear. The fingers and toes are almost complete and all the organs are present but not working.
  • Month 4

    The baby is about 3 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce. The facial features become clearer and the fetus can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move around.
  • Month 5

    The baby is about 7 inches long and weighs about 5 ounces. Its hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows appear. The baby becomes more active while the teeth keep developing and organs keep maturing.
  • Month 6

    The baby is about 8-10 inches long and weighs about 8-12 ounces. Breathing movements begin and fat deposits under the skin.
  • Month 7

    The baby is about 10-12 inches long and about 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Periods of activity are followed by periods of rest and quiet.
  • Month 8

    The baby is about 14-16 inches long and 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. It continues to gain weight rapidly and may react to loud noises with a reflex jerking action. The bay's position changes with its head down.
  • Month 9

    The baby is about 17-18 inches long and about 5 to 6 pounds. The baby continues to gain weight and fat deposits continue so skin becomes smooth. The fetus has less room to move around so its movements decrease. The baby now acquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mother's blood and descends into the mother's pelvis and is ready to be born.
