Marshall Plan

George Marshall proposed a U.S. aid package tp Eurpean nations. Weatern Europe accepted while Eastern Europe rejected the aid.

NATO

A defensive allience to stop the spread of communism. The first peacetime military allience which maintained more than 500,000 troops.

Korean War

Caused by Domino Theory and containment policy. Called the “Forgotten War” because it comes in between WWII and Vietnam.

Launching of Sputnik

The worlds irst artifical satellite. Sputnik traveled around the earth at 18,000 miles an hour.

Space Race

The launch of Sputnik lead to the Space Race. Increased spending in education, especially in math and science.

Bay of Pigs Invasion

Mar 1, 1960

Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to secretly train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba. It turned out to be a disastter when in April, 1961, 1,200 Cuban exiles met 25,000 Cuban troops backed by Soviet tanks and were soundly defeated.

Cuban Missle Crisis

During the summer of 1962 the flow of Soviet weapons into Cuba, including nuclear, increased. Kennedy made it clear that the U.S. would not tolerate offensive nuclear weapons in cuba.
