Post French and Indian War: Acts of Parliment

  • Molasses Act

    This act taxed molasses, rum, and sugar imported to the colonies from anywhere except Great Britain. The colonists reacted to this act by widespread bribery and smuggling.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    This act prohibited settlement west of the Appalachian mountains.
    The settlers ignored this act and settled west anyways.
  • Sugar Act

    This act raised tax revenue in the colonies increasing the price of sugar imported from the West Indies. The colonist boycotted this act by refusing to buy British products.
  • Currency Act

    This act regulated paper money in the colonies. The colonist continued resenting Great Britain, and refused to pay.
  • Stamp Act

    This act raised taxes in the colonies to for the use of British military. This also started the use of stamped papers to ensure the payment of taxes. The colonists reacted with petitions, protests, boycotts, and non-important agreements against the tax collectors. Harrassing tax collectors.

  • Stamp Act Congress

    Colonist unite under the Stamp Act Congress: organized boycotts
    Sons of Liberty was created.
  • Quartering Acts

    This act forced colonists to house British troops. The colonist felt as though it violated their rights. Several legislatures did not supply the needed funds.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declares that British government has the power to tax. Britain has ABSOLUTE POWER. The colonists ignored British power and regarded it as an example of corrupt government.
  • Townshend Act

    This act put taxes on common items such as tea, glass, lead, and dyes. It also made the importation of common items more difficult. The colonists were outraged and stopped importing British goods, mobs, violence, boycotts.
  • Townshend Acts Repealed

    Townshend acts repealed except for tea. India company has permission to monopolize tea industry to the colonies
  • Boston Massacre

    This is where the colonists where heckling the British troops and the troops retaliated, firing shots that killed five and injured six more. The colonists thought this was a purposeful attack, so the colonists felt unsafe. Officers found not guilty.
  • Tea Act

    This act granted Britain permission a monopoly on tea sales to the colonies. This colonist reacted to this by boycotting tea and this eventually led to the Boston Tea Party.
  • Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party was an act of protest against the Tea Act, where colonists dressed as the Native Americans and threw British tea into the harbor.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    A set of acts meant to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. The colonists reacted to this by issuing the First Continental Congress.
    The port of Boston was to be shut down until the colonials paid Britain back.
  • 2nd Quartering Act

    Colonist must provide shelter for soldiers in their homes.
  • First Continental Congress

    This was a meeting of the delegates from twelve of the thirteen colonies. This was held to discuss the Intolerable Acts and to start a petition against these acts.
    Formed to protest Intolerable Acts
