  • Whigs and Tories

    • A rumor spread through England that Roman Catholics were plotting to kill King Charles II and give the throne to Charles brother James, who was the Duke of York.
    • All over England people were either for or against the king.
    • The two sides were the whigs and the tories. The whigs were for the king, and the tories were against the king.
  • Federalists

    • Hamilton was the founder.
    • Was the first United States political party. -Northern business men, bankers, and merchants supported the federalists
  • anti-Federalists

    -gathered around Jefferson
    -called themselves Democratic-Republican
    -drew there followers from planters, small farmers, and artisans
  • Sourthern Democrats

    -strongly favored salvery
    -belevied in state rights
    -belevied that the states had a right to seced (leave the union)
  • Republican

    -established as a major political party by Abe Lincoln when he became president
    -Lincoln got 180 of the 303 votes
    -Lincolns election was the imediate casue of the civil war
  • Progressive Party

    • Also called "Bull Moose"
    • Theodore Roosevelt was the the parties presidental canidate
    • They favored farmers and workers
