Political Changes in the Twentieth Century

    In the twentieth century, the majority of third world countries changed their political system to be more similar to the West resulting in multiparty democracies, although some third world countries continued to differ from the West by having authoritarian governments.

    The Constitution of Mexico was ratified. This document established a democracy in Mexico. This represents a change as Mexico became more like the West.
  • 2. Change

    Japan enacted its new constitution due to being defeated and WWII. This constitution made Japan a democracy. This represents a change as Japan had made a political system like the West.
  • 3. Continuity

    Kim Il-sung became leader of North Korea. This marked the beginning of dictatorship in North Korea. This represents a continuity as North Korea resisted Western political ideas.
  • 4. Change

    India became the Republic of India which established a democracy. This represents a change as a third world country became more like the West.
  • 5. Continuity

    Fidel Castro became prime minister of Cuba. Once Castro was in power Cuba became authoritarian. This represents a continuity as Cuba continued to differ from the West politically.

    Saddam Hussein formally took the presidency. Under his presidency, Iraq became much more authoritarian. This represents a continuity as Iraq continued to have a different political system than the West.

    Argentina became a true democracy as it had a civilian elected president. The “democracy” before it was characterized by military coups and dictatorships. This represents a change as Argentina had become a democracy like the West.

    Brazil became democratic by overthrowing the controlling military regime. This represents a change as Brazil became democratic like the West.
  • 9. Change

    The Sixth Republic of South Korea began. Despite Western influences, South Korea had authoritarian governments up to the Sixth Republic which represented the true beginning of democracy in South Korea. This represents a change as South Korea became democratic.
  • 10. Change

    Chileans elected Patricio Aylwin as president. This represented the beginning of true democracy in Chile as previously it was characterized by military coups and dictatorships.
