Piaget stages of development

Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development

  • Sensorimotor Stage (0-2 yrs)

    Sensorimotor Stage (0-2 yrs)
At this stage, babies learn through movement. At 8 months old, they develop something called "Object Permanence". This is the concept that objects still exist even when you can't see them. This doesn't fully develop until around 2 years. My sensorimotor stage began Dec. 12, 1997.
  • Preoperational Stage (2-7yrs)

    Preoperational Stage (2-7yrs)
At this stage, children cannot associate 1 situation with another. The also can only see the world from their own point of view. This is called "egocentrism". Lastly, they do not understand conservation, they only focus on visible change. For example, if you switch the same amount of water to a taller glass, they will believe that the taller glass has more, even if they watch.
  • Concrete Operational Stage (7-11yrs)

    Concrete Operational Stage (7-11yrs)
In this stage, kids begin to think with more logic. They also understand conservation of amount now. Even though thinking is organized, it is still only concrete (i.e: physical)
  • Formal Operational Stage (12-adulthood)

    Formal Operational Stage (12-adulthood)
At this stage abstract knowledge forms. You also begin to come up with problem solutions and think morally.
