Community College Impact

  • Early 20th Century

    Early 20th Century
Junior Colleges were founded to provide higher education to the local area. People realized that an educated work force makes for a stronger economy. The greatest impact is that affordable education was available to more people.
  • Sports and Social Aspect

    Sports and Social Aspect
Sports teams created community and a reason to gather together outside of class. Students needed some time to relax and enjoy life, not all classes and homework. Sports has always seemed to create a comradery among the student population.
  • Diversity

    Diversity
Community colleges, by being more affordable and accessible, assisted in bringing a more diverse population to the school. In my experience, the community college that I have taught prior to coming to Arizona had a more diverse population than most universities.
  • Student Activities

    Student Activities
As time moved forward, community colleges added various clubs and activities. The clubs and activities also assisted in the socialization of the student body. From my experiences, the last place I worked had a lot of clubs that appealed to many people. There were clubs for different ethnic backgrounds, single mothers, students government, program of study specific groups, and some with religious affiliations.
  • Technology

    Technology
The increase in technology, such as human patient simulators (HPS) in nursing, have changed the way that education is being delivered. HPS can simulate real body functions where students can practice and learn and not harm any individuals.
  • COVID-19

    COVID-19
COVID-19 has changed the world, PC included. Spring 2020, all classes needed to taught online. New ways to teach courses online were purchased. By using the live streaming, the nursing faculty can demonstrate a skill to large groups of students in several rooms.
