My family is from Mexico, and parents are Deaf.
-
I'm not sure of what my first words were. Both languages were introduced to communicate.
-
Grandma didn't know English but would show me simple picture books and point to the animals. Saying "dog, cat, horse."
-
It wasn't until Kindergarten where I started learning ABC's and spelling. No reading just numbers 1-10 and speaking sentences. Only writing ABCs and some simple words.
-
I was confused about whether to use English, Spanish for Sign Language with everyone. I had problems developing language and other academics. Simple sentences were read like "The cat is orange." Started writing words and simple sentences.
-
Embarrassed to speak Spanish so continued to speak English but had a lot of speech problems. More complex sentences read but not comfortable reading books.
-
Reading wasn't improving and horrible math grades. My family decided to hold me back to improve my academic skills. My class read The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. I was still in Speech Therapy and trying to read chapter books.
-
Finally, in 4th grade, I started reading chapter books and enjoyed them. The Boxcar Children, Because of Winn-Dixie, and Goosebumps. Started writing clear sentences and stories.
-
Textbooks started to be assigned with stories in them to analyze the content. Books read on my own were Holes, Narnia, and The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
-
Essays were written by hand and improved writing skills but still struggled with grammar. Favorite books read are A Child Called It, The Outsiders, Speak, and Frankenstein.
-
Many books were read, analyzed and understood. Writing improved and developed tremendously by being in AP classes. High School is where most of my reading came from. My favorite books were Lord of the Flies, The Great Gatsby, The Jungle, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Hobbit.
-
With the help of tutors and professors, I was able to improve my higher education writing and reading skills. College is where I developed a passion for learning and found ways to study new content. Textbooks were mostly what I've read throughout my college career.
-
The love for reading isnt predominant but I will strive to read more books that I enjoy. Textbooks and outside chapter book readings are what I read currently.
