Ts'ai Lun was a government official in China who was also the first to start the paper-making industry. It is said that he made paper by mixing finely chopped mulberry bark and hemp rags with water, mashing it flat, pressing out the water, then hanging it out to dry in the sun. He also wrote the first written record about the process of paper manufacturing and his guidelines continued to be used for several more centuries.
