The Germans are going to explode the Danish navy, but King Christian X says for his army to bomb their own navy before the Germans do. Kirsti thinks that the explosions are fireworks.

Kirsti has broken a button on her sweater and goes to the button shop for a repare. It turns out that Mrs. Hirsch no longer owns her button shop because she is Jewish. There is a sign in front of her shop written in German.

The Rosen family is Jewish and the Nazis are searching for jewish people. Peter takes the Rosen parents away to safety, far away from the Nazis.

The Rosen parents are no longer able to take care of Ellen or even be with her so the Johanson take her in. They pretend that Ellen is their former daughter Lise.

The Nazis have come to the Johanson apartment to find the Rosens but only Ellen is there and is pretending to be Lise. The Nazis walk into Annemarie's room and Ellen is wearing her Jewish star necklace. Annemarie ripps off her necklace just before the Nazis walk in the bedroom.

It is not safe for Ellen to stay in Copenhagen, the Nazis are looking for her and her family so Mama takes Ellen, Kirsti and Annemarie to uncle Henrick's house in Gilleleje.

To distract the Nazis, the Johansons have a fake funeral for their "Great-aunt Birte" when she actually does not exist.

The Nazis come to the fake funeral and ask mama why the casket isn't opened for 'Great-aunt Birte', and mama lies to the Nazis saying that Birte died of typhus and that the body could still be infected.

Mama breaks her ankle when out for a walk and needs Annemarie to deliver a very important package to uncle Henrick through the dark woods.

Annemarie is travelling through the dark woods to deliver a package to uncle Henrick. A couple of Nazis and their dogs have found Annemarie and asked her what was in the package. It was hankerchief with a drug on it that can take away the dogs' sense of smell.

Uncle Henrick is about to take the Jews to Sweden but, Nazis came to the dock to find Jewish people. Because of the drugs (loss of sense of smell drugs) the dogs can no longer sniff the Jewish people hiding in the boats.

Uncle Henrick has taken the Jews to Sweden, to safety.

Peter had died with other members of the resistance. He had been captured and then excecuted by the Nazis and it was terrible to hear the news on such a happy day in Denmark.

WWII has ended and Denmark is once again in peace, there is a parade on the street and everyone is happy, especially the Rosens and Johansons.

Mama and Papa break the news to Annemarie of how Lise actually died. She was a member of the resistance and had been hit by a car by the Nazis.
