North Korea shoots a very large missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean. This firing shows the world that North Korea has immensely increased the range of its missiles. It was North Korea's way of showing that they had power. It caused a roadblock in foreign relations with the U.S. and many other countries because North Korea posed more of a threat now.

North Korea had signed the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) in 1985. However, North Korea withdrew in early 2003 because it started to organize an illegal enriched uranium weapons program. This is a huge set back.

North Korea made a pact to abandon it's quest for nuclear advancements. They then said they rejoin the NPT and allow IAEA moniters and inspectors to come in to prove that they were ending their nuclear programs.
