    Soviet Union invaded Korea, which had been under Japan's control since 1910. Fearing that the Soviets intended to seize the entire peninsula from their position in the north, the United States quickly moved its own troops into southern Korea. Japanese troops surrendered to the Russians in the north and to the Americans in the south.The United States and the Soviet Union agreed to divide Korea along a lateral line that bisects the country, the 38th parallel.

    The United States' military, under the command of General Douglas MacArthur, moved to set up a civil administration for North Korea in the wake of the presumed destruction of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. MacArthur planned to find North Korean generals, especially Kim Il-Sung, and try them as war criminals.

    4 North Korean patrol boats had surrounded the 906-ton USS Pueblo off the eastern coast of North Korea. The ship had been deployed to the coast of North Korea, where the crew was supposed to gather intelligence without interference. It was supposed to remain in international waters beyond the 12-mile limit claimed by North Korea. Pentagon officials were confused with what had happened. A U.S. ship hadn't been captured by an enemy state since the Napoleonic wars more than 150 years before.

    9 South Koreans, accompanied by 2 U.S. officers and four American military police, ventured into the DMZ to prune a poplar tree. South was met near the tree by a North Korean lieutenant and 7 other men. North Korean lieutenant demanded the party halt its work. When he was refused, a truckload of North Korean reinforcements showed up. The incident quickly turned into a bloody conflict, resulting in two American soldiers being beaten then axed to death.

    United States go to the United Nations to determine “what our next steps should be in response to this very serious step.” President Bush stated in a televised speech that such a claim of a test is a "provocative act" and the U.S condemns such acts.[27] President Bush stated that the United States is "committed to diplomacy" but will "continue to protect America and America's interests."
