    After consolidating power as the head of the National Guard, Somoza Garcia ran and was elected as the president of Nicaragua at the end of 1936. To do this, he had to resign from his position at the head of the National Guard in order to be eligible to run for the presidency. On January 1st of the following year, he resumed control of the National Guard again.     Due to increasing pressure from rebelling factions that were moving in on the capital, Anastasio Somoza Debayle resigned from the office of the presidency on July 17, 1979. The regime was overthrown by the Sandinista National Liberation Front. This was the official end of what had been a 40 year reign of the Somoza Dynasty in Nicaragua.
