    He was the first european man to visit new zealand.He was dutch.
  • James Cook

    James Cook is one of nz most known explorer. He was the man who found out that nz was more then one island and that infact there were two because he thought stewart island was part of the south island.

    He was in New Zealand at the same time as James Cook and was unfortunate to miss James Cook but contact with the maori was mostly peaceful even though they kidnapped a maori to take back to France but the maori later died at sea.
  • Marion du Fresne

    He also had contact with the maoris but it wasnt as peaceful. Through some misunderstanding Maori killed 25 French men including Marion du Fresna himself and the french got revenge by killing atleast 250 local moari.
  • Whaling

    The first european industry in New Zealand was whaling and the first whaling ship was William and Ann which arrived in 1791.
  • Sealers

    Sealing took place in remote areas with large seal populations.
  • Flax Trade

    Flax was found useful for for rope used on boats. Thomas Raine and David Ramsey set up a trading base at hokianga for trading flax and timber.
  • Maori Population

    In 1800 there were about 120,000 Maori in New Zealand.
  • Missionaries

    They were Christian priests and teachers who wanted to convert Maori to Christianity.Thomas Kendall who was an Angelican missionary was the author of the first Maori dictionary. He also opened the first school in New Zealand.
  • The British Navy

    The British govt developed an intrest in New Zealand and sent the British Navy.
  • British Population

    by 1830 it is estimated that there were about 300 europeans in New Zealand.
  • The first people

    The polynesians arrived somewhere between 800 and 1240 on canoes.They found a beautiful island full of wild life and plants.They were Nga Tamariki A Maui-The Children of Maui.They diddn't have a written language but they passed they language down generation to generation by singing and chanting.
  • Peace

    For a long time the land was peaceful the only wars being between diferent tribes.But birds were becoming extinct because the polynesians had bought in dogs and rats and with the dogs killing flightless birds such as kiwi and weka and rats eating eggs and the polynesians eating the huge flightless birds named moa the plentyful bird life was becoming less and less.
