James Cook is one of nz most known explorer. He was the man who found out that nz was more then one island and that infact there were two because he thought stewart island was part of the south island. -

He was in New Zealand at the same time as James Cook and was unfortunate to miss James Cook but contact with the maori was mostly peaceful even though they kidnapped a maori to take back to France but the maori later died at sea. -
Marion du Fresne
He also had contact with the maoris but it wasnt as peaceful. Through some misunderstanding Maori killed 25 French men including Marion du Fresna himself and the french got revenge by killing atleast 250 local moari. -
Whaling
The first european industry in New Zealand was whaling and the first whaling ship was William and Ann which arrived in 1791. -

Sealing took place in remote areas with large seal populations. -

Flax was found useful for for rope used on boats. Thomas Raine and David Ramsey set up a trading base at hokianga for trading flax and timber. -

For a long time the land was peaceful the only wars being between diferent tribes.But birds were becoming extinct because the polynesians had bought in dogs and rats and with the dogs killing flightless birds such as kiwi and weka and rats eating eggs and the polynesians eating the huge flightless birds named moa the plentyful bird life was becoming less and less. -
