After WW2 Germany was divided into four parts and so was berlin. The Soviets wanted it for themselves so they closed all transportation services to berlin. Ultimately starving his people so they could black mail the other nations into backing out and giving berlin to the soviets. Instead The U.S participated in the berlin airlift which supplied berlin with food and supplies.

In the "space race" the U.S was battling the Soviet Union for technoligical superiority by getting to the moon first. The Soviet Union launched sputnik and succesfully landed it and was the first aircraft to reach the moon.

The U.S sent over a spy plane over the USSR and they shot it down. After it was shot down the pilot was captured and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was released after two years in a trade for a Soviet spy.

The Soviets had stationed nuclear bombs in Cuba and the U.S had a military and political standoff with them for fourteen days. The Soviets removed there bombs but it was a huge scare to the U.S public when thinking about nuclear war.
